Here, in the midst of the majestic mountains of the Hohe Tauern, is also the cradle of mountaineering. The Großglockner, the king of the Tauern, fascinated the pioneers of mountaineering at an early age. In July 1800 it was first climbed from Heiligenblut in Carinthia. The conquest of Kals in East Tyrol was finally successful in 1855. This marked the beginning of a new era for the small, unknown mountain village. The best mountain guides in the world soon came from Kals, who were even selected for expeditions to the Western Alps or the Caucasus. The film “Großglockner – King of the High Alps” shows, how the life of the people in Kals is still shaped by peasant traditions and how important mountain guides are today for the small village at the foot of the Großglockner.

Production data:

Format

Documentation, 2010

Production

Medienkontor / ARTE

Written and directed by

Gernot Stadler

Sound

Dietmar Kaltenhofer

Redaktion

Viviane Schmidt-Gaster

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_gallery _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” gallery_ids=”1199,1201,1203,1205,1207,1209,1211,1213,1215″ fullwidth=”on” background_layout=”dark” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_gallery][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Story The Großglockner is the highest mountain in the Eastern Alps with 3,798 m above sea level.
